Three Little (BIG) Things All Dog Owners Should Know

ICO.jpg

Many of you may not have had the opportuity to see Dr. Ian Dunbar speak publicly at a seminar as of yet, so we thought we'd give you a little taste. A few months ago he spoke at EG (Entertainment Gathering) where he shared what he believes are the top three important things people should know to live with and train dogs. We here at Dog Star Daily thought it would be a good idea to share the video with you. Enjoy!

Great

It's always so great to see Ian speak, he's a very good speaker. I like how he talks about punishment here.

I was on some forums just yesterday and a new member had asked a question. They had been punishing their dog and I was pretty sure their dog was biting and snarling because of the punishment.

Some other members had recommended other types of punishment. A sort of "you can't let them get away with that" attitude. I wrote my typical post about positive training, gave the address to this website, and was very positive in my tone.

Well, one of the regulars kinds of called me out a little, basically saying while she liked my posts, how could I always recommend NOT punishing. This was tricky, because this person and the other long time members are good people, and successful dog owners despite our disagreements on this topic. So I wrote back saying, by the evidence in her question, I didn't believe this person knew how to punish correctly, and so recommending different punishment was not going to work.

When I say it that way, it sounds better than when I said it on the forums. But as I was watching this video, I thought how Ian described punishment was so eloquent.

It's this sort of eloquence that will help transform people's thinking even when they're very embedded in their current thinking about dogs.
