It's Guys Like You, Mickey!

I endured approximately 2 hours and 55 minutes of the Golden Globe Award telecast last night before the highlight was revealed. It wasn't seeing Steven Spielberg deservedly win the Cecile B. DeMille lifetime achievement award for his incredible body of work. It wasn't the rare appearance of Brangelina or seeing gazillion time winner Meryl Streep. It wasn't the gowns, the glitz and all the glamour. No, it was Mickey Rourke accepting the Best Actor award for his starring role in "The Wrestler." For one, he was almost unrecognizable from the 80's/early 90's version of himself. If you were around during those days, come on, you remember 9 1/2 weeks, right? Mickey was the definition of hotness in those days. He was suave, debonair and destined to be Hollywood's next leading man. However he experienced a major fall from grace, plagued with problem after problem including substance abuse, drug arrests, lost movie roles, botched plastic surgery, and ultimately labeled a poor risk and difficult to work with. He even tried his hand at professional boxing in the late 90's. However amidst all this craziness, apparently there was one constant in his life, and that was his connection with dogs. And this was reflected in his acceptance speech last night:

"Sometimes when you're alone, all you got is your dog and they meant the world to me."

Since I hadn't been a fan for years, finding out about this side of him was a pleasant surprise. Apparently he's well known to be a dog lover and animal activist in Hollywood. In fact his various dogs have accompanied him to many red carpet events around town. Way to go, Mickey! And way to make a comeback! What's even better is the fact that his heart dog is a tiny Chihuahua named Loki who frequently wears jeweled girly dog collars and clothes. How's that for stereotypes? Like I said before, it takes a big man to carry around a tiny dog! Despite your hardened, scruffy, tough guy exterior, oh Mickey you're so fine! You've definitely re-earned a fan in me!
