Deborah Flick over at Boulder Dog attended Dr. Dunbar's Science-Based Dog Training with Feeling seminar in Denver, CO this past March, and she wrote a series of wonderful blog posts about her experience.  In this iWoofs we respond to her thoughts on the seminar, which were very interesting.

Wow! This was fun!

Hi there Ian, Kelly, and Jamie! I loved listening to the three of you having so much fun responding to my posts. I'm honored. What a cool way to have a conversation with all of you---From Ian's workshop to my written blog to your audio post. Ian, I appreciated your clarifying two things in particular. One was about "emotional feedback."  Jamie and Kelly were correct that I was thinking about the title of the post "...with feeling." But, I think you're totally on point by noting that we don't want to give emotional feedback when training our dogs by, for example, reacting out of anger. I smiled when Ian said (I'm paraphrasing) "Saying 'I love you dog,' and a giving a kiss on the head after the training session is fine." That's so sweet.

The other was about "luring being the fastest way to get a behavior." As soon as you said, "Luring the is fastest way to get a behavior on cue," I thought, yes, that's what I meant. I should have reread my notes! Then after listening to your conversation I'm thinking, as you all said, it's probably both.

I'm hoping to publish another post about the workshop--on punishment (so interesting!)--before I ship off to Sweden for Bob's chicken camp in a couple of days.

Your joyous response when the dogs bounded into the room your were taping in was sweet. Made me smile. It was lovely listening to you talk with Claude and cajole him from nipping at his wound. He was a special boy. May he rest in peace.
